Mont Saint-Hilaire is one of the ten Monteregian hills
located near Montreal, in the southwest of Quebec. This
mountain is part of the central area of the Mont
Saint-Hilaire biosphere reserve, designated in 1978, a
first in Canada. It is located in the town of
Mont-Saint-Hilaire and covers an area of 16 km² on the
right slope of the St. Lawrence River basin, in the
regional county municipality of La Vallée-du-Richelieu in
Montérégie. 30 km east of Montreal, Mont Saint-Hilaire is
home to more than 350 minerals, 40 of which are exclusive
to the region, as well as Lake Hertel and the Gault Nature
Reserve at McGill University. From its height of 411
meters, Sugarloaf Mountain, one of the mountain's peaks,
offers a panoramic view of the region, the Montreal Olympic
Stadium and the Adirondack range in New York State.
Here are some of the popular hiking trails at Mont
Saint-Hilaire:
Grand tour of Mont St-Hilaire (11.3 km): A beautiful hike
that offers a magnificent view of the Rocky and Le Pain de
Sucre summits. Access is paid for for adults, but free for
children. It is recommended to book in advance online1.
Le Pain de Sucre via the Yellow Trail (5.5 km): This trail
will allow you to discover the Gault de Mont-Saint-Hilaire
nature reserve, one of the last intact ancient forests in
southern Quebec. You will enjoy magnificent panoramic views
of four peaks. Access to this reserve is also managed
online.
Dieppe Trail (8.2 km): Popular with locals and tourists,
this well-maintained trail is ideal for beginners. It
offers a good slope for runners and has some rocky sections
to climb near the summit.
These trails will allow you to enjoy the natural beauty of
Mont Saint-Hilaire, whether in winter or summer!
Mont Saint-Hilaire is home to several rare animal species.
Here are some of them:
Butterflies: Around 800 species of butterflies have been
recorded in the Mont Saint-Hilaire Biosphere Reserve.
Birds: More than 200 species of birds frequent the
mountain, more than 80% of which nest there. Some are
considered rare or threatened in Quebec.
Reptiles: There are 2 species of snakes and 2 species of
turtles, some of which are rare.
Mammals: Although less numerous, several rare mammals also
inhabit the region.
In short, the fauna of Mont Saint-Hilaire is diverse and
valuable for the conservation of biodiversity.
